Thank you for helping with the UNC Math Contest in past years! We look forward to your continued participation this year, which is the 22nd year that UNC has offered a math contest for students in grades 7-12.

Sign up on the for the mailing list, so you will automatically receive an emailed PDF copy of the first-round exam on November 1.

The contest rules, summarized below, are the same as last year:

  • Administration dates for Round 1: Monday November 4-Thursday November 7, 2013.
  • Submit answer forms online (or by mail, postmarked) by: Friday November 8.
  • First Round Solution Seminar for students, teachers, parents: Saturday Nov. 9 at 1pm, Ross Hall, UNC campus.

Check the website for details.

Contest Rules: Both rounds of the UNC Mathematics Contest are pencil and paper only. Calculators are not allowed, and no electronic devices are to be used during the contest. The first round of the contest is administered by teachers or their designated assistants.

Administration process for First Round:

  1. Download and make copies of the contest exam and answer forms.
  2. Administer the 90 minute contest exam some time at your convenience during the contest window, which is November 4-7.
  3. Return the students’ answers to us electronically at or by mail, postmarked by Friday November 8.

Advantages of Online Submission:   The past two years’ online submission process was quite successful, and we encourage you to use that method if it is convenient for you to give students computer access at the end of the contest to submit their work. One benefit of the online format is that it allows us to provide faster and more detailed numerical feedback about student performance, which will be e-mailed directly to you. If you submit paper materials for us to grade, we will not be able to send detailed information about all your students’ performance, but you will receive a list of students who are invited to the next round.

If you have questions about the contest, please feel welcome to email us at    If you know of other teachers who may be interested in the contest, please feel welcome to forward this email to them. These teachers can register to be on our mailing list and find detailed information about the contest at the UNC Math contest website at

The website also contains a broad range of other information for both students and teachers, includingan archive of past exams and solutions.

Younger Students: The contest is designed for students in grades 7-12. Younger students are welcome to participate if they have an interest in math at this level, regardless of what math they take in school and what grade they attend.

Below is this year’s announcement flyer and a copy of last year’s contest problems, which may be distributed to students and parents:
