Denver, Colorado — The Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and eNetColorado has signed an agreement that provides all Colorado K-12 schools and districts and the Colorado Department of Education unlimited seats to Esri’s ArcGIS software. The agreement supports integration of technology and 21st century tools into the new Colorado Academic Standards.

“In today’s education budget crisis, we are looking for ways to leverage partnerships, like the one with Esri, to give our teachers and students the tools they need to participate in  problem-based learning,” says Dale McCall, executive director of the Colorado BOCES Association. “Esri’s GIS (geographic information system) technology allows students to do real fieldwork.”

Additional Colorado educational partners have supported this agreement: Colorado Department of Education, Colorado Community College System, and the Colorado Geographic Alliance. “Because of the unique ability of Esri’s GIS software to make data visual, this tool can be used in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), geography, history, and various career and technical education subject areas,” according to Robert Hammond, Commissioner of Education, Colorado Department of Education.

To support the use of ArcGIS software, eNetColorado, a statewide consortium of school districts, BOCES, and educational partners, will develop a statewide teacher training program to introduce GIS into the classroom. GIS Colorado, a non-profit organization represented by members of the Colorado GIS community, is also providing financial support for these staff development efforts. Online as well as face-to-face professional development will be available. Self-paced training through Esri’s Virtual Campus will also be accessible.

Requests for information about Esri software for Colorado schools can be made to Dr. Teresa Yohon at tyohon@enetcolorado.org. An online process for ordering Esri software will be available by September 26.
