Through the NSF Science and Technology Center in the Department of Atmospheric Science is offering two courses this summer at Colorado State University (CSU) that are part of their professional development series for teachers who are interested in learning more about weather and climate. These courses are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.

This year CSU will offer two courses in their professional development series: “The Science of Weather and Climate” and “Weather and Climate Across the Globe.”

Course I

The Science of Weather and Climate (for elementary/middle school teachers)

Dates: July 8-10, 2013

In this 3 day course, we’ll explore the principles of energy, radiation, phases of matter, motion and forces necessary to understand processes in the atmosphere that give rise to our weather and determine our climate. The choice of topics is carefully matched to science content standards for elementary and middle school, and the choice of instructional approaches is designed to provide ideas for how teachers of grades K-8 can develop lessons for their own classes.

Online registration will be required and a link will be available after 4:00 pm (MDT) on April 1, 2013 for Course I.

Course II

Weather and Climate Across the Globe (for middle/high school teachers)

Dates: July 10-12, 2013

In this 3 day course, we’ll develop an understanding of the global circulation that gives rise to weather and the climate zones across the planet. The choice of topics is carefully matched to science content standards for earth system science in middle and high school.

Each day will include a mix of hands-on experimentation, discussion, lecture, and time for teachers to work in groups to develop lessons to use in their own classes.

Online registration will be required and a link will be available here after 4:00 pm (MDT) on April 1, 2013 for Course II.
